i just finally watched the movie having only seeing reviews about it, and i have to say it was very honest and i don't think people give the credit it deserves. you're not going to see images as real as this movie brought it's viewers. maybe some viewers are in denial about the realities of life. it's like the lion that kills the baby calf. we all know it happens and it's part of living, but we would rather not watch. how about the soldiers coming from wars suffering from ptsd? will those soldiers ever be truly understood by the people who they will be begging money from in the future? kinatay is sickening, but so is life. don't forget that. well, maybe it's too late. go watch another "300" or "gladiator" and call it art.

I see no other reason for calling it "Dark of the Moon" other than the fact that Pink Floyd is pretty much synonymous with the phrase "dark side of the moon".

Wait til the boomers all die out, then Michael Bay Jr can remake T3 and fix that bit in the title. Oh joy.

Great comments--thanks for posting! Credit must also be given to director Wilson Yip for reigning in Donnie Yen's inherent obnoxiousness (if you've seen Donnie's earlier movies you know it's all about Donnie). And yes, both Ips have brilliant action, properly filmed, unlike the overshot mess in most Hollywood movies. Let the action speak for itself, instead of simulating action through shaky camerawork and choppy editing. Of course you have to have a stable of stuntmen who can actually fight, so HK is one up on Hollywood on that account. Just sayin'

Kinatay is such a mediocre film. It follows the formula that's sure to catch the attention of foreigners (Westerners) - poverty, a dash of nudity and sex, a bit of local culture and denigrating one's society. See my post: http://jamalashley.wordpress.com/2010/11/19/kinatay-2009-canness-best-or-worst-film/

Good comments--the movie really makes great use of the characters' inability to clearly express themselves, which you describe as laconicness. A lot of the plot turns on the characters' miscommunication, which seems to stem from their difficulty in in articulating, all of which is foreshadowed in that opening title sequence. The banality of the conversation is disrupted and contradicted when the very next scene shows the couple in bed together, which suggests that a.) they're not really in touch with their feelings and b.) they wouldn't know what to say even if they were.

This is probably most beautifully exploited by the Coens in one of the scenes after Ray kills Marty, when he tells Abby that everything is taken care of. Even though they're talking to each other they don't seem to be having the same conversation, which leads to more confusion and eventually suspicion on Ray's part. He thinks she's lying to him--she doesn't know why he's so upset. Great stuff, and fun to watch just to see the separate tracks that the two speakers are travelling on--

The funniest part was Mickey Rourke's monologue -- someone clearly told him to give it his best Oscar-clip shot, but forgot to inform him that it wasn't a movie about guys male-bonding in a tattoo parlor.
