dear ben/benito,

This is a yummy and nutritious review! Comparative, with social and political conditioning, a sufficient talk on its aesthetics, definitely AUTEURIST in stand point, you write well. Kudos, my friend! This is the Brocka that I always consider a masterpiece.

I've always enjoyed Bernal's films much more than Brocka's. I liked Maynila and Insiang, but I loved Manila by Night and Himala. I've found myself disliking Brocka for some of the same reasons I don't really dig Brillante Mendoza's work (with the exception of Serbis); they both seem to be shoving their ideas down your throat to the point where everything in their films seems to lose a little bit of life. However, unlike Mendoza, who seems to be exploiting the Philippines every opportunity he gets under the banner of social issues, I do recognize the great importance Brocka has had to the country (it seems, as formulaic and predictable as his films may have been, they're something that the Philippines needed at the time, and I respect that). If it wasn't for Brocka and others from that generation, I don't know if we'd have people like Lav Diaz doing what they do, and the world needs films like Ebolusyon.

On a side note, I'm disappointed I'll be missing the Brocka retrospective. I've never seen any of his films on a big screen and was looking forward to the festival for that very reason. Have fun.
