Someone asked me the other day why I hadn’t written up a 2008 Top Ten list for this blog. I’m not sure, actually. I think it’s because I was a little more wary of listing movies I’d only seen once — and believe me, I know how film-geeky that sounds. The other was that there were other movies I wanted to see but didn’t get to (Frozen River, Waltz with Bashir, The Wrestler). They’ll have to wait.
The latter reason has never stopped me before, really, for I always include older movies I’d seen during the previous year (though the list below has very few “old” movies). This time I’m also arbitrarily stretching it to a 14-month period. (Most movies are linked to a prior review on this blog; some are linked only to notes which might be expanded later to a full entry.)
And so here goes, the ten best movies I saw in 2008 (with six runners-up), in alphabetical order:
Ballast (Lance Hammer, 2008)
Brick (Rian Johnson, 2005)
Che (Steven Soderbergh, 2008)
The Dark Knight (Christopher Nolan, 2008)
Let The Right One In (Tomas Alfredson, 2008)
Medicine for Melancholy (Barry Jenkins, 2007)
Sátántangó (Béla Tarr, 1994)
The Vertical Ray of the Sun (Tran Anh Hung, 2000)
Wendy and Lucy (Kelly Reichardt, 2008)
You the Living (Roy Andersson, 2007)
And the runners-up:
The Fallen Idol (Carol Reed, 1948)
Foster Child (Brillante Mendoza, 2007)
Gran Torino (Clint Eastwood, 2008)
Revolutionary Road (Sam Mendes, 2008)
Slumdog Millionaire (Danny Boyle, 2008)
Up the Yangtze (Yung Chang, 2007)
